At this time, there was a lot of tension among the religious rulers of the day. They had seen Jesus cast out demons and heal a leper. Then, they see Him tell a lame man his sins have been forgiven and then tell him to get up and walk. Now He calls a tax collector to be one of his disciples and then goes to eat with a house full of tax collectors and other “undesirables”. The tension comes about because Jesus’ actions are forcing them to make a decision about Him that contradicts all their traditions and (oral) laws.
