Freedom of Conscience
As we wrap up our study of the Reformation, we conclude with Roger Williams’ move toward Freedom of Conscience-the freedom to worship in one’s own way, including the right not to worship. Prior to 1636, nearly every government on earth assumed responsibility for spiritual as well as political concerns, often invoking laws demanding that citizens worship at a certain church and in certain ways. However, Roger Williams proposed the idea of Freedom of Conscience when he came to the New World. This eventually was the basis for the first amendment to the US Constitution-freedom of religion without government control. Luke 9: 52-56; Romans 5:1 (NKJV)

The Reformation Continues Into the New World
The development of the New World opened up a door for those wanting to separate themselves from the Church of England and establish themselves outside of persecution and within their own revolutionary thoughts. From this religious freedom leaked a fuel for a larger movement of complete freedom for all religious movements apart from governments. Philippians 4: 4-7 (NKJV)

    Baptism Beliefs During the Reformation
Baptism was a paradigm shift in the Reformation. There were lots of disagreements between infant baptism and Baptism after salvation (Believer’s Baptism). People were even imprisoned for baptizing adults after salvation. We look at the events of that time and the common beliefs of that time as well as how those who believed in Believer’s Baptism were persecuted and eventually left for the New World. Matthew 28:19 (NKJV)

    Reformation in England
The Reformation in England plays into why we are where we are today Biblically. As the Bible is being translated into English by Tyndale, we see many new words such as atonement, Passover, and scapegoat being used for the first time. We also see the word baptism being transliterated instead of translated. Bro. Mike explains why all this is important in the way we came to the Bibles of today. Galatians 3:27 (NKJV)

    The Breakdown of the Vernacular
A history of the translations of the Bible is given, beginning in the fourth century with Jerome and continuing through the Reformation to the seventeenth century. As it was translated from the Hebrew to Latin, words were changed thereby changing the meaning as well because the Latin version was influenced by the Catholic Church. In Tyndale’s translation (1525), which was from the Greek to English, the words were given their true meaning. Matthew 28:19 (NKJV)

    Justification By Faith
Justification occurs instantaneously through faith. Martin Luther believed this after studying the Scriptures. However, other religions of the time did not. This is what brought about the Reformation, which spawned many religious denominations from the Catholicism including Lutherans, Calvinists, Anglicans, Presbyterians, etc. Romans 4:4-5, 5:1 (NKJV)

    Martin Luther and the Reformation
Every square inch of land where Luther was at belonged to the Roman Catholic Church. Yet he had the faith and courage to stand against all the religious and political powers of Europe in defense of his beliefs and led the Great Reformation. Romans 1:17; Mark 1:15 (NKJV)
