God Came for The Whole World
Jesus and his disciples begin to baptize believers and John the Baptist’s followers question John about their authority to do so. John says that Jesus’ power was given to Him from Heaven and that He must increase, and that John must decrease. He knew that his ministry was coming to an end as Jesus’ ministry was just beginning. Later we see Jesus in Samaria speaking to a Samaritan women at Jacob’s well. He speaks to her not only of her sin in her personal life, but also of the inaccuracies of her religious and cultural beliefs about the Messiah. John 3:22-John 4:30; Isaiah 11: 1-5 (NKJV) (Tablet video unavailable due to technical difficulties.)

    You Must Be Born Again
Nicodemus approached Jesus one night to learn more about Him. Jesus told him that the only way to get to Heaven was to be born again. The first century Jews were no stranger to the phrase “born again”, but it had different meanings to them and there were six ways to be born again for the Jews. However, none of them included the spiritual birth of which Jesus spoke. John 2: 23-3:21; 1 John 4:6; Numbers 21:4-9 (NKJV)

    Resurrection Sunday
    Series: Easter
On the day of Jesus’ resurrection, Mary, John, and Peter visited the tomb only to find Jesus gone. They did not yet know or understand the scriptures that said He would rise again. They were afraid and hid in a house with all the doors and windows locked. It was there that the risen Lord visited them. John 20: 1-3; 1 Corinthians 15: 3-4; James 1: 23-25 (NKJV)

We often think of the great sacrifice Jesus made when we think of Passover, however, this is also the story of Judas Iscariot, the apostle who betrayed Jesus but never really put his faith in Him. 2 Corinthians 5:21, 13:5; 1 Corinthians 15:3, 11:23-25; Exodus 21:32; Zechariah 11:11-14; Matthew 26: 15,21-25 (NKJV)

John reveals many things the synoptics did not because he wants us to know many more things about Jesus, who He was and what He did. Today we look at Jesus’ first Passover visit to the temple at the beginning of His ministry. John 2: 12-22; Malachi 3:1 (NKJV)

The Approval of the King-Part 8 (The Best for Last)
John 2 starts out with the beginning of Jesus’ ministry at a wedding feast. It is here that Jesus performs the first miracle of His ministry-changing water into wine. The host ran out of wine. It normally takes three days of fermentation for grape juice to become wine. However, Jesus was able to instantaneously change water into wine in order to manifest God’s glory and for the disciples to believe in Him (vs.11). And the wine He created was the best wine (vs. 10). God often uses everyday stuff in our lives to bring out His truths. John 2:1-11; Mark 7:1-3 (NKJV)

Today we see the first of the apostles affirm Jesus as the Messiah (the Christ) as we continue our study of “Jesus As Lord-The Approval of the King”. We also see the beginning of discipleship as Andrew and Philip bring their brothers to Christ. John 1:28-51; Colossians 1:15-16; Genesis 41:50-52; Jeremiah 31:9; Exodus 4:22 Genesis 28:12, 17 (NKJV)

The Approval of the King-Part 6
We continue the study of Jesus as Lord. Today we look at Jesus’ baptism and his time in the wilderness immediately following. Jesus’ baptism was a declaration of who He truly is. Afterwards, Jesus went into the wilderness where He faced Satan and temptation. We can draw a parallel with our own lives as Christians. After we are saved, we make a declaration of our salvation through baptism. It is then that Satan pretty much declares war on us and we face our time in the wilderness. Matthew 3:16-4:11, Mark 1:12-13; 1 John 2:1-2; 1Peter 5:8-9; James 4:7 (NKJV)

John’s Gospel is written in Aramaic toward the end of the 1st century. Aramaic was widely used by Jews and Gentiles and John was fluent in Aramaic. He uses the word “Memra” which means “The Word of God”. John tries to point the Jews and others to the cross by explaining who Jesus is and how He is the only way to salvation. John 1:1-14, 1L 29, 20:31; Matthew 12:6, 24:1-2 (NKJV)

Try thinking like a first century Jewish person. By understanding their thoughts, we can be more effective when witnessing to our Jewish and/or Muslim friends. We can understand why the Jews had such a difficult time understanding that Jesus was the Messiah. Pastor Mike will be preaching a series of sermons dealing with authenticating Jesus as Lord. This is the first of that series. As we learn about Jesus’ purpose and ministry, it helps to understand the Jewish culture mindset at that time. In this sermon, we look at the origin of the Scribes, Pharisees and Saducees. These groups put up walls around God’s laws that became obstacles to really knowing and following His Word. Are there obstacles in your lives to knowing and following Jesus? Mark 7:5 (NKJV)

    Authenticating the Lord Jesus
We recognize Jesus by many titles: Messiah, Lord, God, Christ, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, First and Last, Bright and Morning Star. It is important the we validate (or authenticate) Jesus so that we can build a bridge with others and deepen our own faith. Today we look at scriptures that help us do just that. Mark 1: 1-11; Acts 19:1-6; Luke 3:1-4; John 1:6-11; 2Kings 1:1-8; Malachi 3:1, 4:5-6; Isaiah 11:1-2; Daniel 9:24-27 (NKJV)
